About

Welcome to Tuning in Fifths
Welcome to Tuning in Fifths, a blog for amateur violinists and violists navigating the joys and challenges of playing music outside of a professional career, especially those with a curiosity about Baroque style and historically informed performance.
I’m an adult amateur violinist and violist exploring modern and Baroque playing. Like many of you, I don’t play music for a living, but it’s a vital and fulfilling part of my life. This space is where I reflect on what it means to grow as a musician, and where I provide practice tips, gear repertoire guides and more based on my experience as an amateur violinist.
A Bit About Me
I started violin as a kid, but a mismatch with a teacher and mounting frustration led me to quit for about 15 years. Five years ago, I returned to classical violin lessons as an adult feeling hopeful, and very rusty.
Since then, my musical life has grown in ways I never expected.
These days, I:
- Take weekly violin lessons
- Alternate between two community orchestras
- Play chamber music when I can
- And yes, I also nerd out about chin rests, strings, rosin brands and other gear
